NOSTALGIA & PARANOIA

In the winter of 1999 I stumbled on the work of Daniel Clowes.
This opened the way to whole new group of graphic artists to admire and enjoy. Some letters were send back and forth and when I heard the news in 2001 that his graphic novel Ghostworld would be turned into a feature film, I sensed the time was right to do a short documentary on him and his work and have an excuse to, for the first time, cooperate with Ramon dos Santos who composed the haunting score.

Broadcasted in february 2002 by the VPRO, in the film one sees Clowes drawing a four panel story which turned out to be the cover of the TV guide.

In the last panel there is a striking portrait of me and cameraman and good friend Stijn van Santen.

DID JESUS HAVE
A BEARD?

During the legendary exhibition Sanctuary Mental Space (Centraal Museum, Utrecht (NL) 2003) Tuinder & Kaganof worked together with such eminent Spacecadets as Catherine Henegan, Jimmy 'wordsworth' Rage, Philipp Virus, and Jeffery Babcock, among many others, to fight evil spirits from the Dark Side.

During one of the rehearsals for the concerto by Kaganof, Tuinder and Tomoko Mukaiyama the latter continued to study the world premiere of Ramon Dos Santos' 'MUSIC FOR THE BLIND' while Tuinder started painting a portrait of Jesus while Kaganof gave him contextual advice.

PRIME TIME

And although I'm aware of the inrony of experiencing my sexual and intellectual zenith while spending government money in a very trashy ladiesclub while actually, in reality, just painfully searching for love: I cannot deny the realness of this feeling. I'm in bloom. Here and now. From now on, things will only go downhill. Its never going to get better than this. This is my peak. I've reached my genetic limits. In a way, the way I am now is who I really am. Who I'm meant to be. I'm more Me now than I've ever been, and I will never be more Me than I am now. From now on my hair will grey, and if I'm lucky to get old enough I'll be able to see how I will slowly fade-away with age.

REAL ABSTRACTISM

Maarten Ploeg, 1997

First shown on PARK TV on 24 oktober 1998 this tape was one of a series of thirty so-called TV Matics I made during those years with Maarten Ploeg. The idea was to make a fully automatic television generating programme. So we could, after a few days of fun work, sit back and for the programs to show and the money to pour in. Although I took part in the conception of the TV Matic, the final works were much more Maarten's babies than they were mine.

The TV Matic was fead with a couple of hundred possible parts of sentences that he would pick, every 10 to 15 seconds, ad random, and assemble those words into sentences. All programs were endless in essence. The endlessness made, among other things that the TV Matic as a character came very much alife.

And is was another manifestation of abstract reality when we both noticed that, after working till deep into the night and watching our baby speak freely for the first time, we were both genuinely moved by some of his words and decisions.

The BOB series (which were of course a tribute to the Easy Guru de Luxe, Bob Ross) had three episodes. One on cubism, one on pointilism, and this hard-edge version.

During an exhibition of all TV Matics in the Museum Van Bommel Van Dam in Venlo. Maarten described the personality of the TV Matic as a manifestation of 'Artificial Stupidity.'

Here's Bob Hard Edge at the original full length of 60 minutes.

During the show in Arti et Amicitiae in 2006, as a tribute to Maarten after his premature death, the TV Matic made a sad come back. A last salute. Ploeg is OK, so we are here. But it's a sad sad loss to not be able to talk or write to him.

The background color of this short speech is a color Maarten once defined as 'PC beige', as in the nineties for some obscure reason, most personal computers were caged in blocks of this undefined shade of light.
